About Utilization

The utilization window shows a graphic overview of the utilization of each resource in the active view. It helps you to check the efficiency of resource utilization and to identify the bottleneck in your factory. The utilization information can also be exported by means of an interface or Publish Schedule, both accessed from the Integration menu.

The graph shows the proportion of resource time in the work area of the particular planning board view that is visible and how it is allocated. Some batches straddle the work area boundaries, and only the parts of these that fall within the boundaries are included in the calculation. If, through overlapping, a resource has a utilization level of more than 100%, you will be warned.

Resources can be allocated to the following five areas:

  • Downtime on a resource is the total duration within the work area taken up by maintenance and other irregular interruptions, less any overlaps between downtime batches. For example, two downtime batches last from 5:00 to 15:00 (10 hours) and 2:00 to 10:00 (8 hours). The batches overlap from 5:00 to 10:00, therefore the total downtime across both batches is equal to the end time of the first batch minus the start time of the second batch: 15:00 - 2:00 = 13 hours.
  • Non-productive time on a resource is the total duration of batch setup and changeover segments, and parts thereof, on it within the work area. CIP batches are counted as non-productive time.
  • Productive time on a resource is the sum duration of all inflow, offset (slack) and outflow batch segments and parts of these segments within the work area.
  • Idle time on a resource is the period within the work area that is not occupied by process batches (non-productive and productive time), time periods, or downtime. The minimum value allowed is 0.
  • Unavailable time is the period in which the resource is not available. It is the sum duration of all time periods and parts of periods falling on it within the work area, less overlaps with downtime or between time periods. Only time periods for which you have selected the Capacity not Available During this Period by Default option are considered.
