Creating value-based subsets

Value-based subsets are subgroups of dimensions which meet certain criteria. For example, create a subset of all products which had Sales greater than 1000 during January in the Germany and France.

To create a value-based subset:

  1. Open the Dimension Browser for a dimension.
  2. Click Subset Wizard.
  3. Click Value-based Subset.
    The available cubes are listed.
  4. Click a cube and click Continue.
The second step of the Subset Wizard lists the remaining dimensions of the cube. Here you select which elements, of each dimension, will form the value on which the subset is based.
  5. Click the tick icon next to the name of a dimension.
    The Dimension Browser is displayed.
  6. Mark and keep the elements relevant to your query (for example, Sales, Actual, January etc.) and click OK.
  7. Click Suppression of empty cells.
This option makes the Subset Wizard ignore all empty cells in the database when performing the query and so increases the speed with which the subset is generated. Do not deselect the option unless you want to include empty cells in your selection.
  8. Click Use only base elements.
Deselect this option only if any of the elements selected from the various dimensions are consolidated elements.
  9. Click Continue.
  10. Select an operator from the Value list and specify a value in the field at the right.
  11. Click Continue.
All elements that meet the specified criteria are listed.
  12. Click Continue.
  13. Click either Dynamic subset or Static subset.
    The Subset Wizard is displayed.
  14. Click Save or OK.
The Save Subset dialog is displayed.
  15. Name the subset.
To make the subset accessible to other users, click Public subset.

To display the list elements non-hierarchically, click Flat view. Flat view also enables users to rearrange, by drag & drop in the Dimension Browser, the order of the elements in a subset.

If you select Navigation subset, you can expand consolidated elements within the subset. You can see all the elements, not only those specified when the subset was created.

Click Static subset to change a dynamic subset to a static subset.
