Subset wizard

Dynamic subsets (attribute-based and value-based) can be created only in the Subset Wizard. However, the Subset Wizard also creates static subsets. You specify whether a subset should be dynamic or static in the last step of the wizard.

To open the Subset Wizard, double-click a dimension in the Dimensions and Subsets dialog. Then click Subset Wizard.

The toolbar of the Subset Wizard has buttons for defining four types of subsets. They are:

  • Static Selection: This type defines an unchanging subgroup of elements.
  • Value-based Subset: These are subsets of dimensions which meet certain data criteria of a particular cube. For example, a subset of all products with Sales greater than N for a particular month in selected regions

    See Creating value-based subsets

  • Attribute-based subset: This subset type contains a subgroup of elements defined by common attributes. For example, if your Products dimension has an attribute table listing the product manager, you might generate a subset of all products that are the responsibility of a particular manager

    See Creating value-based subsets

  • Subset by Level: This type of subset is based on the hierarchies of a dimension

    See Creating subsets by level

Below these buttons are two option buttons:

  • Definition: Displays the subset type and its elements.
  • Elements: Displays the elements, but not the subset type.
