The Dimension Properties dialog

Click Dimensions on the ribbon. Right-click the dimension of which you want to see the properties and select Properties. In the Properties dialog is information about the selected dimension and you can define security options for it. The dialog has two tabs labeled General and Access Permissions.

The General tab shows you:

  • The name and description of the dimension.
  • If access control has been applied, the name of the access control cube

    See Access control

  • The number of elements in the dimension.
  • Whether the dimension is currently loaded in memory.
  • The number of consolidated levels in the dimension.
  • Whether the dimension has been modified since last being loaded.

By default, dimensions are displayed hierarchically in the Dimension Browser. If you select the Flat View check box, the dimension is displayed non-hierarchically. In flat view you can drag elements to new positions in the hierarchy.

To show the consolidations in reverse order in the Dimension Browser, select Inverted hierarchy.

The Flat View and Inverted Hierarchy options can also be controlled from the Create and Edit Dimension dialogs which also have a Properties button.

Access permission

With OLAP Server, you restrict access to the various elements of a dimension.

See Access control

For example, you may want only certain roles to see data associated with certain regions within the Regions dimension. Or you may want all roles to read data for all regions, but only certain roles to write data associated with certain regions.

These access restrictions are defined in a Dimension Access Control (DAC) cube.

SeeDimension access control.

You can create a DAC cube for the selected dimension or, if a series of DAC cubes have been defined for the dimension, choose another DAC cube to control the access permissions.

See Assigning data access permissions to cubes.
