Using key query in the Dimension Browser

In an Alea Ad-hoc report, the slice-dimensions are displayed vertically. To use key query on the slice-dimensions, click the bottom slice-dimension and click Key Query in the Dimension Browser. The position of the slice-dimension is important because key query checks only the active elements of the slice-dimensions above the slice-dimension on which the query is run.

This example uses the Best Practices OLAP database supplied with Office Plus. It demonstrates the difference between key query and zero suppression.

  1. Click New Alea Ad-hoc Report in the Office Plus group on the ribbon.
The Define Alea Ad-hoc Report dialog is displayed.
  2. Select the Best Practices OLAP alias and the SALES cube.
  3. Arrange the report so that the Profit dimension forms the rows and the Time dimension forms the columns. Move the Interco dimension to the bottom of the slice-dimensions.
  4. Click Select Element for the Product slice-dimension and select SUV80/245.
  5. Click Select Element for the Interco slice-dimension and select External Others.
  6. Click OK.
There are no values for the selected combination of elements. The Alea Ad-hoc report displays empty cells (indicated by #NA).
  7. Close the report.
  8. Repeat steps 1 to 5.
  9. Click the browse button on the Profit dimension and clickZero Suppression.
The Alea Ad-hoc Report displays "No values in the view".
  10. Close the report.
  11. Repeat steps 1 to 6.
  12. Click the Interco slice-dimension in the report.
    The Dimension Browser is displayed.
  13. Click Key Query and click OK.
    The report displays values.
