Reallocation

Reallocation is not a writeback method but an option which can be used with the different writeback methods.

In Ad-hoc reports and formula reports, reallocation commands open the Write Back dialog in reallocation mode.

In Alea Ad-hoc reports, reallocation commands open the Reallocator dialog.

Reallocation changes the values of base and consolidated elements without changing the value of their parents. You can enter a new value and specify where the difference between the old and new values should be allocated.

Example

In an Ad-hoc report, your fourth quarter forecast for a year is 36000, to which October, November and December each contribute 12000. You want to change the forecast for the individual months without changing the overall forecast for the quarter.

In the cell for October enter #W14000?

The Write Back dialog opens with Weighted reallocation selected as the method. In the Reallocator section of the dialog select the Time hierarchy. November and December are listed as siblings.

You can allocate to one or both siblings the 2000 difference between the old and new value. To allocate the difference to both siblings, select them both and click OK.

The forecast for October is 14000 and the forecasts for both November and December become 11000. The overall budget for the quarter remains 36000.

Data elements

Microsoft Analysis Services supports data elements. A data elements is a copy of a parent element but without the status of a parent. So, you can write back to a data element without affecting the child elements.

Example

You have a hierarchy of staff in which the manager is the parent element. If you are planning the salary of the manager, you can write back a value to the Manager data member instead of to the Manager element. In this way, the salaries of the other staff do not affect, and are not affected by, that of the manager
