Sequential Transfer of Data Files

After a communication network between the personal computer and the Infor M3 SWB application is established, the central system will allow data files to be sequentially transferred. This can be conducted with an asymmetrical connection or a connection through the LAN (such as Token Ring or Ethernet for example).

The topics contained in this section are:

  • How to Conduct a Routine Data Transfer
  • Processing of Errors and Defective Orders during Download
  • Extraction of Data and Production Plans during Download

How to Conduct a Routine Data Transfer

To conduct a routine data transfer, follow the steps below:

  • Extract data regarding the definition and layout of the file sequence
  • Transfer the files sequentially to a second computer and to the correct disk drive. (This can involve transformation from ANSI to OEM standards or vice versa)
  • Load the transferred files

Data can be transferred into Infor M3 SWB in two ways:

  • Total Transfer. The existing order database in Infor M3 SWB is deleted and all files from the external source are transferred.
  • Incremental Transfer. New orders from the external source are added or updated in Infor M3 SWB. They replace or delete the existing orders in the Infor M3 SWB database.

After all orders are downloaded, Infor M3 SWB performs an automatic system check of all material connections between supply and demanding orders.

Processing of Errors and Defective Orders During Download

If an error is found in a file, then all the records for the order to which is associated are omitted from the downloading sequence. File information is written to a scrap file with a description of the error and its location in the database.

Errors and defective orders can be located in the following:

  • Top orders or daily customer orders
  • Operations
  • Material connections

Extraction of Data and Production Plans During Download

Infor M3 SWBs production plans can be extracted from the downloading process and saved in a separate data file. You can choose the type of record or the type of orders and time horizons you want to extract. To specify the layout of different record types use the separation character (;). Some fields are mandatory, while others are voluntary.

It can also be beneficial to extract a total production because some of the order data downloaded into Infor M3 SWB can function as backup data with potential to re-establish the order database (and all the check functions) if necessary.

You can also choose to download external data such as resource or work center data into Infor M3 SWB files. Configure an input panel that controls how input record information is mapped while being downloaded into Infor M3 SWBs local database files.

Because all report and panel information is saved directly into a spool file, you can check the results of the download procedure. The panels are laid out in the same way as they are in the panel screens. Spool files are in ASCII file format, which makes it easier to transfer to other systems, such as the central system, spreadsheets or other computer workstations.
