Writing back data

With Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, you can enter data in Application Studio WebServices and write it back to the database. Cells containing data to be written back are indicated by a triangle.

When you write back numbers, you cannot enter separators. Decimal points are interpreted as commas.

When you enter a value in a writeback cell, the Write button in the toolbar is enabled. Click Write to write back the value.

How you navigate within, and between, cells that are enabled for write back depends on the write back mode selected in the Application Studio client. The Writeback behavior option in the properties of a report has two modes: Spreadsheet and Form. In Spreadsheet mode, you can navigate between cells with the Tab key or by using the arrow keys on the keyboard. The currently selected cell has a black border. To edit a cell, press F2 or double-click the cell. In Form mode, you can navigate between cells with the Tab key or with the mouse. The left and right arrow keys move the cursor one character at a time, through the value in the cell. The up and down arrows move the cursor to the beginning or end of the value respectively. In Form mode, the current cell is not indicated, except by the position of the cursor. Writable cells are automatically editable.

If you navigate away from the report (for example, you select another report in the report tree), a message warns that there are unsaved changes. You can click:

  • Yes, to save the changes and continue
  • No to discard the changes and continue
  • Cancel to remain in the current report

If there are unsaved changes and you close the browser, you can click OK to continue and lose your changes or Cancel to remain in the current report.
