Adding a component to a Bill of Materials

Once you have set up a Bill of Materials as described in Creating a Bill of Materials, you can add component items to it as follows:

  1. Locate the item to be used as the component by specifying search criteria in the Item Selection window.
  2. Add the component item to the relevant BOM in the BOM Structure window. To do this, you can drag and drop the item from the Item Selection Result window, or highlight the relevant BOM and select Add Component from the toolbar or Action menu. A new component item is added to the BOM Structure window.
  3. Specify the component information as required in the following fields in the Details window:
    Comment
You can add any comments regarding the component in this field. For example, if the status of the component has been changed to Hidden you can specify the reason in this field.
    Component Item Code
This is shown for information and is a non-enterable field.
    Component Sequence Number
This is the sequence in which the components are displayed in the BOM Structure window. It is also a unique identifier. That is, you cannot have two components in a BOM with the same sequence number.
    Component Unit of Measure
This is shown for information and is not for user entry.
    Description
The full name or description of the component.
    Engineering Change Number
The number of the change made in the engineering/design stage of the component. Used for information.
    Parent Item Code
This is shown for information and is a non-enterable field.
    Proportional or Fixed Quantity
This indicates if the quantity of the component required is proportional to the base quantity of the BOM parent item or is a fixed quantity.
For a fixed quantity component, the same amount of the component is needed regardless of how much of the parent item is being produced.
    Quantity Required
The quantity of the component required for the finished item.
    Status
    The status of the component.
  4. When you have added components to the BOM, you must save it. Select Save BOM from the toolbar or File menu.
