Elements are multiplied by their weight factor before consolidation. The
value of a consolidated element is always the sum of the values of the elements
it contains. However, because weights can be positive or negative numbers,
simple subtraction can be achieved.
To change the weight of an element, double-click the
Weight field or select it and
press
F2 to make it editable.
Specify a new weight and press
Enter.
Note: In a shared environment, changing the weight of an element can have
a significant impact on other users' data.
Example
The overall value of a product’s sales, minus the variable costs,
gives the Gross Margin figure. Gross Margin can be a consolidated element
containing a Sales element and a Variable Costs element. The calculation is
done by giving Variable Costs a weight of -1.
Note: Changes made to dimensions or new dimensions are only permanently saved to disk when
you save the entire dimension or when you save the dimensions in the Dimensions and
Subsets dialog. You can experiment with changing dimensions, without making the changes
permanent.
