Creating and editing data areas

To create a data area, you assign subsets for one or more dimensions. If no subset exists for a particular dimension you can create one from within the Define Data Area dialog. Specify subsets for all dimensions to which to limit access.

Unlike cubes, data areas can be edited (once a cube has been created, only its description can be edited).

To create a data area:

  1. Click Cubes in the Database group on the ribbon.
In the Cubes and Data Areas dialog, the cubes that have data areas defined have a plus (+) sign on their icon.
  2. Select the cube for which to create a data area.
  3. Click New data area.
    1. To specify a subset for a dimension, click Select Elements.
    2. Select the subset to use or click New Subset to create a subset.
To deselect all the selected subsets, click Reset.
  4. To include only elements with non-zero values, click Suppress empty cells.
  5. To suppress consolidated elements, click Use only Base elements.
  6. To make a data area available to all users who have access to the parent cube, click Public data area.
Note: By default, data areas are private. A public data area can only consist of public subsets. You cannot use a private subset in a public data area. But you can use public subsets in a private data area.
