Creating a business unit

Use Business Unit Administration to create a new business unit. It is used to create the database tables for the new business unit. You identify the database file group to be used, which must already exist. This then creates all of the necessary database tables and files to support this new operating entity.

To create a business unit from Business Unit Administration (BUA), select the business unit group the new business unit is to be created in. From the Action menu, select Create. The Business Unit Setup form is displayed. After completing Business Unit Setup, the database tables for the new business unit are created and a final message is displayed to confirm the fixed currencies defined have been created. You are then taken back to Business Unit Administration (BUA). The new business unit will be displayed in the list under the appropriate business unit group and will have the status of offline. The Action Code will be Business Unit Created and both the Action Date and Action Time fields are updated.

Note:  The business unit group must be online before a new business unit can be created.
Note:  When you create a new business unit, report models are not automatically created for the business unit. This must be carried out manually using Report Models. This is an important step, and must be carried out in order to run reports.

The Business Unit Create form contains the following fields:

  1. Complete this information for SQL installations:
    Business Unit Code
    The three character code that uniquely identifies the operating unit. You must use all three characters, and the first character must not be numeric. Some business unit codes are restricted. For a full list see Business units in the Glossary menu.
    Language Code
    Specifies the language to be used in text fields for the basic data installed in the new business unit. Use this option to prevent the installation of languages that are incompatible with the code page of the database.
    Filegroup for Tables
    This shows the default filegroup to be used for the business unit's tables.
    Filegroup for Indexes
    This shows the default filegroup to be used for the business unit's non-clustered indexes.
    Change Data Groups
    You can change the filegroups shown in the Data Group and Index Group fields above by clicking Change Data Groups. The filegroups must already exist.
    Note:  In SQL installations, the file group provides a mechanism for grouping database files together for administrative purposes. For example, it allows selective backups and restores of a group of files.
  2. Complete this information for Oracle installations:
    Business Unit Code
    The three character code that uniquely identifies the operating unit. You must use all three characters, and the first character must not be numeric.
    Tablespace
    This shows the default tablespace to be used for the business unit's tables.
    Tablespace for Indexes
    This shows the default tablespace to be used for the business unit's indexes.
    Change Data Groups
    You can change the tablespaces shown in the Data Group and Index Group fields above by clicking Change Data Groups. The tablespaces must already exist.
  3. Save your changes.
