Modeler Overview

Birst Modeler empowers users to smartly access, prepare, and network data on their own.

Modeler consists of three main steps for optimizing your data through connecting, preparing, and relating.

  1. Connect to Data. From the Modeler Connect page, you can connect your space to a Cloud application, a database, or upload a file of tables to access and import the desired data for reporting.
  2. Prepare Data. From the Prepare page, you can make additional modifications and transformations to the data. Transformations are familiar and straight-forward, such as splitting or merging columns, filling in empty cells, etc. Complete descriptions of the modifications are at Deep Dive: Transformations.
  3. Relate Data. From the Modeler Relate page, you can set up relationships between the various data sources you have imported and set up in Modeler. The Relate page handles database joins, attributes and measures. The Relate page will also allow you to make column modifications for flexibility to the data.

When you are working in a space, the name of the current space displays at the top. Clicking the arrow icons will allow you to navigate between your spaces.

Enterprise Space

Professional Space

Enterprise Spaces enable complex, scalable data management with dimensional data models. Enterprise spaces are best suited for reporting on many large data sources.

They enable the creation of a dimensional data model, which can accommodate importing large amounts of data and granular control of your semantic layer.

Professional Spaces enable streamlined data analysis with self-service data preparation. Professional spaces are ideal to enable analysts to conduct self-service analytics.

They allow users to quickly connect to different data sources, transform their data, relate it, and conduct analysis.

When should I use an Enterprise Space?

  • Easy to incrementally scale your data analytics as you add new data sources to the model.
  • Granular control of the semantic layer and advanced security to allow for consumption of the resulting analytics from many users across the organization.

When should I use a Professional Space?

  • Easy to use, from data ingestion all the way to data preparation, modeling, and reporting.

  • Faster time to insights compared to Enterprise spaces.

When should I use a Professional Space instead?

  • Fine grain control and advanced settings means that the time to insights is higher for Enterprise spaces than Professional spaces.

When should I use an Enterprise Space instead?

As complexity increases, Professional spaces will become harder to maintain and expand than Enterprise spaces, since there is no dimensional data model created.

Note: Usage of any Flash screen (example: Flash-based Classic Admin) to make any changes in a Professional space is not supported and may result in the space becoming corrupted. If the broader feature set of modeling features formerly offered in Classic Admin is needed to build the necessary use cases in the space, it can be found in Modeler by using Enterprise spaces.
