Creating a standard slice

There are two types of slice: standard and variable. You can create both types in the New Slice dialog. This topic describes how to create a standard slice.

The XML definition of a slice is displayed in the XML Definition field of the Advanced properties of the slice.

To create a standard slice:

  1. In Design mode right-click the Slices folder in the Accessories pane and select New Slice.
  2. Specify a name for the slice and, optionally, a description.
  3. Select Standard as the type of slice.
  4. Select the alias and cube on which to create the slice.
  5. Click Add Hierarchy in the Rows section and select the hierarchy to form the rows of the report. Select the type of suppression to apply to the rows.
By default, None is selected and no values are excluded from the results. Select Empty or Zero & Empty to exclude rows that contain only empty values or only zero values.
  6. Optionally, click Edit list in the 1st Segment column and use the list designer to specify which elements to include on the horizontal axis of the slice.
If you do not edit the list, all elements of the hierarchy are included.

    See Server List Designer.

  7. Optionally, click Add Segment to add further segments of the hierarchy to the horizontal axis.
  8. Add further hierarchies and segments to the horizontal axis as required.
You can add up to fifteen segments of each hierarchy.
  9. Repeat steps 5 to 8 to specify the hierarchies and segments of the vertical axis.
  10. To filter the elements displayed by a segment, click Edit Axis and specify a filter.
  11. To add filter, or slice, hierarchies, click Add Hierarchy in the Data Area . Then click Edit slice in the Selection column to select the elements of the filter in the slice designer. Select an aggregation function from the Aggregation list. By default the sum of the values is returned.
If your report already includes lists, in combo boxes for example, you can click Fill to automatically add those lists as filters.

You can add multiple filters, but only one selection of elements for each.

  12. Click OK.
