Using wave planning
The production order process must use wave planning for the system to use consolidation. For production orders, each wave can contain a single production order number or multiple production order numbers. Waving multiple production orders can increase the control of consolidation using shared speed line locations. Speed line locations is used between production lines and other control measures for production. The Production Staging page is used primarily for setting up shared locations. If setup on the item alone is not required, then the Production Staging page can also be used for a central list view for all production lines. When using multiple production orders on a wave, item configuration for shared locations must not change, for example, Minimum or Maximum.
Wave consolidation will use the correct consolidation logic for all items, first determining consolidation requirements from the Production Staging page, then by item configuration if not setup on the Production Staging page. For the order, wave planning can be:
- the shipment order number
- the external order number
- the initiating document number, or production order number
On the Wave Maintenance page, a Stage column is available on the Consolidated Items tab to determine the production line number when multiple production orders are on a wave.
If configured correctly, then creating the wave automatically performs the consolidation logic in the system without user interaction. Consolidation assigns a consolidation location to each item if all of these configurations are set:
- System setting to automatically consolidate orders is on
- Automatically consolidate orders selection is on for the item
- Quantity of the item on the wave is greater than the minimum wave quantity on the item
After consolidation is complete, view the results on the Consolidated Items tab on the Wave Maintenance page, or on the Assign Locs tab on the Item page. Key information available on the Assign Locs tab includes the Speed Line or Speed Pick Location, Minimum Capacity, Maximum Capacity, Minimum Replenishment UOM, and Replenishment Priority. When configuring shared locations in the Production Staging page, item configuration must not change. If consolidation information is incorrect due to configuration, then correct the data, unconsolidate the wave, and consolidate to verify the data changes have corrected any remaining issues.
