Configuring an Item
This section covers all of the configuration options on the Item screen.
Before bringing inventory into Infor WMS Warehouse Management, you must configure all of the item codes, assigning unique identifiers to every item that is handled in the facility. Each item should have the same name that the customer uses to see the item. An item can be as broad as FAK (Freight All Kinds) or it can be as specific as the item UPC code.
An item can also be called an item number, SKU (Stock Keeping Unit), or item code. An item in Infor WMS Warehouse Management is comprised of two parts:
- Owner (owner of the item)
- Item
You cannot define an item without specifying a valid owner.
Correct item configuration is essential to the success of a Infor WMS Warehouse Management implementation. The values you specify in the Item screen affect most the application’s functions.
To accommodate multi-facility processing, item data can be added and defined with the application in two levels: Enterprise and Warehouse. Transactions for all of the warehouses are held on an individual schema at the Warehouse level, while company-wide data is held at an Enterprise level. Item records are initially created at the Enterprise (company) level. However, certain item details can be defined at the individual Warehouse level; thereby giving each facility the opportunity to define the handling of an item within their individual location.
For example, at the Enterprise level, you can create a new item and define criteria such as lottable field requirements, shelf life requirements, and pack information. At the Warehouse level, you can define warehouse-specific information such as cycle class, putaway strategies, and rotation requirements.
For additional information on multi-facility processing, see the Infor WMS Multi-facility User Guide.
