Pick and Drop overview

Pick and drop is the process of adding locations to tasks for moving goods around the warehouse. For example, a fork operator picks up a pallet and drops it in an interim location, where it rests until it can be moved to its final destination. Pick and drop is not related to regular picking activity. See the Infor WMS Picking User Guide for information about picking.

This diagram shows a multi-step pick and drop process.

To support pick and drop activity, the system has an inbound drop location and an outbound drop location for each zone in the warehouse. If a zone has a defined inbound drop location, all pallets moving into that zone are dropped into that location. Conversely, if a zone has a specified outbound drop location, all pallets leaving that zone are dropped into the specified location.

The main purpose of performing this breakdown of work is to address physical restrictions on either the From or Destination location. These can include restrictions on the section or aisle for these locations. An example is a Very Narrow Aisle (VNA), which requires special equipment. The system must be able to break down work on this aisle so that it can assign a separate task of operating the equipment to the equipment operator. The pick and drop option makes it possible for multiple drivers to complete parts of a complex task using RF devices.
