Search qualifier (%) or (*)

Use the percent sign (%) or the asterisk (*) along with numbers, letters, or both, to narrow the search for entries. The order of the numbers, letters, and percent signs in a Search field determines how the Search feature interprets the qualifier.

Note:  In the rules below, the question mark (?) is a variable that could be a letter or number.

Rules for using this search qualifier include:

  • Specify %?% in a Search field to search for all entries that contain the variable. For example, %S% searches for all entries containing an S in the column under that Search field.
  • Specify ?% in a Search field to search for all entries that begin with the variable. For example, T% searches for all entries beginning with T in the column under that Search field.
  • Specify %? in a Search field to search for all entries that end with the variable. For example, %3 searches for all entries ending with 3 in the column under that Search field.
  • Specify ?%? in a Search field to search for all entries that begin with one variable and end with either the same variable or another variable. For example, T%3 searches for all entries beginning with T and ending with 3 in the column under that Search field. One possible result of this example could be TRUCK03.
Note:  In addition to the Search feature, the application has some screens that are search screens.
