Time-specific meals and breaks

Break rules can be configured to comply with meal and break laws like the one in New York State. New York requires meal time to be taken in a specific time range within the shift.

To configure break rules to require a break to be scheduled at a specific time of day, use the Break Starts Between option when defining break activities. These options allow you to specify a range of times when the break can start.

For example, you require a break rule to satisfy the requirement in New York State that employees receive a 30-minute break for shifts over six hours between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Your break rule could have these options:

  • A Shift Min Length of 6
  • A Shift Max Length equal to the maximum shift length defined by your shift rules
  • A 30 minute break activity with the Break starts between options set to 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
This would ensure that any shift longer than six hours that included 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM would receive the break. You can leave the Starts Before and Ends After fields blank, since the break would be included in all shifts that start before or end after the required times.
