Configuring shifts with multiple breaks

A shift may require more than one break. This is configured by adding multiple break activities to a break rule. A shift can only qualify for one break rule, but it can receive multiple break activities from the break rule. A shift includes each break activity included in the break rule that it satisfies the length or time requirements for. For example, a break rule can include a 30-minute break activity starting 3–4 hours into a shift and a 15-minute break activity starting 6.5–7 hours in. An 8-hour shift would include both breaks, but a 6-hour shift would only include the 30-minute break. Break activities cannot have overlapping time windows within the same break rule.

It is important to note that, because break rules define the start time of the break, the end of one break activity can overlap the possible start times for another. Although this configuration is allowed, it may not produce desirable schedule results. You can avoid this by including a gap between the start time ranges of different break activities equal or greater than the duration of the break activity. For example, you have a 30-minute break that starts 3–4 hours after the start of a shift. When adding another break activity, the start time of the new break should be at least 4.5 hours after the shift starts. This prevents the 30-minute break from ending during the start time range for the new break activity.
