Cognos reporting issues

This table shows the common Cognos reporting issue, the cause, and the recommended solution:

Issue Error message Description Reason Solution
Limitation or rows The number of rows retrieved exceeds the limit of '50000 More rows than the allowed limit are retrieved on the report The maximum row limit is set to 50,000 rows in the IR farm (global governance) to prevent long-running reports from impacting performance.
  • Apply filters to reduce the number of rows.
  • Use an enhanced CSV export task for larger exports.

Access is denied in Report Authoring Firewall Security Rejection. Your request was rejected by the security firewall. Access to Cognos Report Authoring is denied due to missing authorization. A required IR role is not assigned, resulting the access request being blocked due to missing authorization.
  • Assign the relevant IR role.
  • Clear browser cache and log out or log in before trying again.
Blank page from scheduled report link N/A A scheduled report is opened from the inbox, but a blank page is displayed.
  • A required IR role is not assigned.
  • The report output version is set too low.
  • Assign the relevant IR role.
  • Update the report output version to a higher setting in Report Authoring.
No data is generated in the report N/A No data is generated in the report, even though data is available.
  • Missing team permissions.
  • Employee not assigned to a team.
  • Data may be archived for selected date range
  • Add necessary team permissions.
  • Assign the employee to a team.

  • Rerun the report in Archive Mode.
Proxy user cannot run reports N/A A proxy user cannot access or run reports. The user acting as proxy is not assigned to the relevant IR role. Assign the required IR role to the employee performing the proxy access.

Time limit is exceeded on core reports The request has exceeded the execution time limit. It will be cancelled. Try other options. Time limit error occurs when core reports are run with all or many teams or employees is selected. The report does not complete and is cancelled.

The report exceeds the allowed processing time:

  • 15 minutes for reports run on demand.
  • 30 minutes for reports run as scheduled tasks.
  • Filter the report to reduce data volume
  • Schedule the report to run in the background to extend time allowance.
