Migration Process

The migration process involves these high-level steps:

Specifying the databases to which you want to migrate the data.
Migration Tools Actions: Compare and Migrate or Specify and Export.

Optional: If you are migrating Cognos reports, you can specify source and target server credentials. See Optional: Specify Report Credentials.
Selecting and, optionally, comparing the migration data (Compare Mode or Specify Mode).
Migration Tools Actions: Compare and Migrate or Specify and Export.

Migrating the data.

WFM Actions: Import Migration File maintenance form.

Note: After you have completed the migration process, if necessary, you can roll back the data to reverse the entire migration. The roll back reverts the database back to the state the database was in before the migration occurred.

The entire migration process can be accomplished through the Migration Tool. The Migration Tool includes these options:

Compare and Migrate
Specify and Export
Run Migration File
Verify Migration Transactions

In environments where the Migration Tool cannot be used to perform the data import due to access restrictions on the destination database or security requirements, encrypted migration data can be exported using the tool and imported using WFM. Encrypted data is imported through the Import Migration File maintenance form.

Note: This option should only be used when it is impossible to perform the import using the Migration Tool.

Use the following table to determine the migration actions you want to perform and how you can accomplish them:

I want to compare data between the source and destination databases and then create a migration file. I do not want to migrate data.	Compare and Migrate, then end the process right after you create the migration file. Note: Be sure to end the process before the process starts to migrate the data.
I want to compare data between the source and destination databases and then migrate the differences.	Compare and Migrate. Verify Migration Transactions.
I want to migrate and register reports from a source database and server to a destination database and server.	Compare and Migrate. Verify Migration Transactions.
I want to specify the data that is to be migrated from the source database to the destination database. I do not want to perform a compare or migrate data.	Specify and Export.
I want to migrate the contents of an existing migration or export file to a database.	Run Migration File. Verify Migration Transactions.
I want to export encrypted data from a source database to be imported into a destination database.	Specify and Export. Import Migration File
I want to roll back the contents from a previous migration run.	Run the roll back through the Verify Migration Transactions action.

Database Connection Rights

In order to perform migration actions, you must have certain database connection rights. For example, when comparing data, you must be able to connect to the source and destination databases. On the other hand, when specifying and exporting data, you need only connect to the source database. Use the following table to determine which migration processes you can perform based on your access rights to the source and destination databases:


	Write or read-only access to the source database	No access to the source database
Write access to the destination database	Compare and Migrate. Compare (without migrating). Specify and Export. Verify Migration Transactions. * Roll back the migration. ** Import Migration File.	Run Migration File. Verify Migration Transactions. * Roll back the migration. ** Import Migration File.
Read-only access to the destination database	Compare (without migrating). Specify and Export. Verify Migration Transactions. ** Import Migration File.	Verify Migration Transactions. ** Import Migration File.
No access to the destination database	Specify and Export. ** Import Migration File.	** Import Migration File.

* Rolling back migrations is performed through the Verify Migration Transactions action.

** The Import Migration File option should only be used in environments where it is impossible to perform the import using the Migration Tool. The Import Migration File option requires administrator access to the WFM application server that is connected to the destination database. The migration file must be encrypted to use this option.
