Jobs and skills
The system can use jobs, skills, or a combination of them to determine who is qualified to perform work. Both jobs and skills are effective dated.
Jobs only configuration
You have the option to set up the schedule to use jobs as the only qualifier for scheduling work. In this situation, the jobs are typically descriptive enough to determine the department in which the employee can be scheduled. Employees must have one preferred job, but they may have additional secondary jobs.
In addition, jobs are the best option to use when the HR system has many different job codes that can be lumped together into one overall job category. This category is called a job set. In this configuration option, the schedule will look at a job and consider any child of that job to meet the qualifications.
Whenever you want to use average hourly rates instead of employee specific rates for cost calculations, then configure the average hourly rates at the job level.
Jobs and skills configuration
Jobs and skills are frequently used together to schedule work. The system will ensure the employee first has the required job, and then the system will look at the skill requirements. Skills are a way to provide more specific information about an employee’s qualifications for work. In addition to having the skill, an employee can be assigned a numeric skill level to determine their level of qualification. This skill level can be used as a scheduling preference, or can be used with the Top Performer scheduling preference.
Skills cannot be grouped together like jobs. This limitation may help you determine which of these configuration options will be used.
Skill only configuration
The skill only configuration is used with the “Any” job indicator. This configuration is used at the store level to ensure minimum coverage with a particular skill. However, the system will not specifically add an employee to the schedule to fill this need. This minimum staffing is drawn from employees in all the departments within the store. For example, a store may want to ensure that one Spanish speaking employee is scheduled at all times. To create this schedule, the store sets up a requirement for Any job and Spanish skill. This requirement will allow the system to schedule the departments normally, while selecting employees in a way that ensures the store will have Spanish speaking coverage.
