Schedule compliance for floated shifts

When floating part of an employee's shift to another unit, two partial shifts are created. However, for the purposes of schedule compliance, the two partial shifts are treated as one contiguous shift.

Similarly, when floating an entire shift to another unit, so that two contiguous segments are created, the system views the employee as working one shift of two units.

Note: If you edit a floated shift so that the segments are no longer contiguous, the segments are treated as individual shifts by the compliance rules.

Example: Floating part of a shift

In this example, these compliance rules are applied:

  • No less than 4 scheduled hours per day-shifts cannot be less than 4 hours
  • Minimum of 10 hours rest between scheduled shifts

An employee is scheduled from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM without a break on the CARDIO team. When you float the employee from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM on the ICU team, two partial shifts are created:

  • 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM on the ICU team
  • 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on the CARDIO team

In this case, no compliance errors are displayed as both partial shifts are treated as one contiguous shift.

Example: Floating an entire shift

In this example, the Maximum 1 shifts per day compliance rule is applied.

An employee is scheduled from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM without a break on the CARDIO team. When you float the employee from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on the ICU team, two segments are created:
  • 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM on the CARDIO team
  • 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on the ICU team

In this case, no compliance errors are displayed as the system views the employee as working one shift of two units.

Example: Editing a floated shift

An employee is scheduled from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM on the CARDIO team. When you float the employee from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM on the ICU team, two segments are created:
  • 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM on the CARDIO team
  • 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM on the ICU team

If you then edit the segment on the ICU team to be from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the segments are no longer contiguous. Therefore, they are treated as individual shifts by the compliance rules.
