Indirect Workloads and Activities

Indirect workload quantifies the activities performed in support of patient care that do not involve the patient directly. Many indirect activities are controlled by department and hospital policy and may be specific to the unit rather than to the patient.

Examples of indirect care include cleaning or checking equipment, running errands on/off unit, verifying orders, making telephone calls, attending meetings, and research activities.

Indirect workloads are configured for each unit in an indirect workloads worksheet. Each worksheet configured for the unit is date effective. When changes are made to a worksheet, the previous worksheet is end dated and a new worksheet is created with a start date of the date the update is made. The final indirect HPPD calculated by the worksheet is the workload scored for the Indirect Workload intervention for each patient admitted or transferred into the unit.

Clinical Science delivers a set of indirect workload activities and amount of time they take to perform. These must be reviewed and updated before users begin working with the system and periodically as requirements change.
