Terminology

Table 1. Terms used in Clinical Science
Term Meaning
Patient workload

Patient workload quantifies direct care interventions, which are interventions performed to or for an individual patient.

Direct care interventions are actions that take care of patients.

Examples of direct care interventions include medication administration, activities of daily living, emotional support, and patient education.

Indirect workload

Indirect care interventions quantifies actions that are related to patient care but they are not performed for or on a patient.

Examples of indirect care interventions are cleaning equipment, gathering supplies, and answering call lights.

Non-patient workload Non-patient workload quantifies activities that occur before patient admission or screening or after patient discharge. This could include activities such as pre-surgery assessments and follow-up calls.
Patient care types Patient care types categorize patients using a status identifier that is based on the type of expected required care. Examples include Inpatient Oncology, Outpatient Surgery and Emergency Radiology.
Patient care type categories

Patient care type categories group the patient care types into broader classifications. Examples include Inpatient, Outpatient, Observation and Emergency.

Patient care services These are the services within the hospital that provide the patient's care. Examples include Burn Unit, Cardiology and General Surgery.
