Accruing paid sick based on time worked

Some business rules require employees to accrue one or more of their balances based on the number of hours they have worked in a given period. These are known as percentage-based accruals.

For example, the state of Connecticut passed an act requiring some employers to award some employees paid sick leave based on the number of hours they have worked. The law only applies to employers with 50 or more employees, and only service worker employees are eligible to receive the paid sick leave. The service worker definition can be found in the act's official text, along with the requirements for awarding sick leave.

Many states and municipalities have implemented similar legislation.

Note: In the sections that follow, we use the Connecticut version of paid sick in the examples. Specific values, accrual rates, and so on will differ from location to location based on the details of the relevant legislation.
