Skills Rule

A skill is a capability ascribed to an employee that enables him/her to perform the activities associated with the employee’s job. Fluency in a language or expertise with electronic devices are examples of skills. Each employee has a list of skills that they possess.

Skills are part of the staffing requirements assigned to locations. When you define staffing requirements, you select the skills required to perform the activities of a location.

The Skills rule determines whether an employee has the skills required to perform the assigned job at the specific location. When a schedule is validated, the system uses the location’s staffing requirements to determine what skills are required and then compares the employee details to see which employees match the required skills. The system shows a violation if the scheduled employee does not have the skill required to work the shift that has been assigned. The violation appears on the day that the employee is assigned a shift that the employee does not have the skills to perform.

Employee A has the following skills specified:

  • cash-handling
  • cash register
  • merchandise restocking
  • sales associate (clothing)

The Downtown location requires the following skills:

  • cash-handling
  • cash register
  • sales associate (appliances)
  • sales associate (clothing)
  • maintenance (cleaning windows)

If the Skills rule has been configured, and the Employee A’s skills and the Downtown location’s skill requirements are as listed above, the following examples demonstrate the Schedule Validation report results.
