Overview

Each location contains an internal type, which is an attribute used to organize your location hierarchy into categories. You can further sub-divide these categories based on your organization’s specific needs using location types.

For example, if there are a dozen different departments within a store. You can use location types to categorize them in such a way that you can search the organization and return all of one location type, across many locations.

There are four pre-defined internal location types that correspond to the operational (location) entities within the application:

  • Corporate entity
  • Store
  • Department
  • Driver (Drivers are not actually physical locations but refer to forecasting. See Drivers.)

You can use these pre-defined internal types to match the layout of your particular organization. The broadest category of internal type is corporate entity. This entity can contain other corporate entities so you can create corporate entities to align with certain levels of your organization.

For example, regional or district locations could function as corporate entities for an organization. You can then identify the stores that branch out from those categories and the departments into which those stores are divided.

You can supplement these pre-defined internal types with user-defined location types. Defining your own location types allows you to differentiate between locations within an organization and specify characteristics particular to your organization. For example, you can create a location type for a restaurant, a hotel, a regional office, or a retail outlet.
