Configuring multiple break rules

Multiple break rules can be defined within an Auto-Assignment group. You can define different shift length ranges to obtain the most desirable placement of breaks within shifts. For example, to ensure breaks occur close to the middle of each shift, separate break rules can be created for shifts 6–7 hours long and for shifts 7.5–9 hours long.

Shifts can only receive the break activities that are defined in one break rule. Break rules cannot have shift lengths that overlap the shift lengths of other break rules, unless you are using the Starts Before and Ends After options to specify the required start time or end time of qualifying shifts.

The Starts Before option is used to create break rules for shifts that start on or before a specified time of the day. The Ends After option creates break rules for shifts that end on or after a specified time. Additional break rules should be created with both options left blank to cover shifts that do not start or end during the specified time ranges. When this configuration is used, shifts that qualify under multiple break rules only receive the break activities from the most specific break rule. Break rules that specify both the Starts Before and Ends After options are always the most specific. When both options are selected, shifts must satisfy both the start time and end time conditions to qualify. Break rules that specify only one option are less specific than break rules with both options. Break rules that specify neither option are considered the least specific.
