Product-specific and non-specific units of measure
You can set up unit conversions that are product-specific or non-specific. The conversion factor is applied to the stocking unit or standard pack to convert it to the unit in which you buy, count, or sell products. The conversion factor is calculated according to the parameters that you specify when you set up the unit of measure (UOM) record. During transaction entry functions, the Product Extended Unit Conversion Setup records are checked to determine if there is a product-specific unit conversion. If so, the conversion factor is used to determine the correct price and cost. If a product-specific unit conversion does not exist, SA Table Code Value Setup records are checked for a unit conversion.
Product-specific UOM
Product-specific UOMs are set up in Product Extended Unit Conversion Setup. The quantity that is associated with the UOM can vary, depending on the product.
For example, a spool of 10-gauge wire contains 1000 feet, but a spool of 6-gauge wire contains 750 feet. A case of product 1-001 contains 200 units, but a case of product 3-010 contains 24 units.
Non-specific UOM
Non-specific UOMs are set up in SA Table Code Value Setup. It is a generic UOM that can apply to all products.
Examples of non-specific units of measure are each that always equals one unit, and dozen that always equals 12 units. When you specify a valid non-specific UOM during any transaction entry function, the conversion factor from the SA Table Code Value Setup is used to determine the correct price and cost.
