Recommendations for copying a business unit

This topic describes general recommendations for copying a business unit.
Note:  Copying a business unit must not be used as a method for data recovery.

Business Rules

This function does not copy Business Rules (event profiles, rule sets, and so on), even if the rules are set up to act on one particular business unit. This is because business rules are defined and stored separately and independently of business units.

Business Unit Definition

The source business unit sales, purchase and inventory definitions can reference another business unit. These settings must be reviewed after the business unit copy has completed to ensure that they are correct.

Standard Text

If you are copying between business unit groups, standard text codes are copied from the source business unit group to the target business unit group if they are referenced by the source business unit and do not exist in the target business unit group. If the standard text code exists in the target business unit group, the text itself is not be copied across.

Document Format

If you are copying between business unit groups, document format codes are copied from the source business unit group to the target business unit group if they are referenced by the source business unit and do not exist in the target business unit group. If the document format code exists in the target business unit group, the details of the code are not copied across.

References to Domain Tables

If you are copying a business unit between business unit groups in different domains, if an operator code is referenced in the source business unit and does not already exist in the target business unit's domain then you must confirm you want to create it. The same applies to operator groups and data access groups. If the operator AAA exists in the source with a name of Andrew Anderson and AAA exists in the target with a name of Alison Anderson all the references in the target, after the copy, will reference Alison rather than Andrew. This is also true for data access groups and operator groups.
