Assigning Characteristics to an Item

After you have defined item characteristics using Item Characteristics (ITC) you can assign them to items.

  1. From the Action menu within Item Master select Item Characteristics. On this form you must specify the values valid for this item. For example, date ranges, logical values or numeric ranges. A warning message is displayed in the entry functions if these values are not entered when required.
  2. Specify this information:
    Item Code and Description
These fields are automatically populated from the current Item Master record.
    Characteristic Code
    Select the required characteristic.
    Characteristic Datatype and Short Heading
The type of data used by the characteristic. For example, alphanumeric. These fields are automatically populated once the Characteristic Code has been completed.
    Logical Value
If the characteristic has the datatype of Logical, the setting of either Yes or No must be defined. Once set, this value cannot be changed when order processing. This setting does not apply to characteristics with other datatypes.
    Decimals Allowed
The number of decimal places allowed if the value is numeric.
    Validated
A validated characteristic stops new values being created in order processing. This means that for discrete characteristics, new values cannot be entered, and for ranges characteristics the values have to be within specified ranges. If the characteristic is not validated, new discrete values can be added and the values can be outside the ranges when processing orders.
    Value From
The lowest value allowed for this characteristic.
    Value To
The highest value allowed for this characteristic.
    Used for Matching
Indicates whether or not this characteristic is to be used during the allocation process. That is, items are only selected for issue if they match the characteristic values on the sales or movement order.
  3. If the datatype of the characteristic you have assigned to an item supplier is a discrete value, you must specify the values. From the Action menu within Item Master Assign Characteristics select Discrete Values.
Item Code, Characteristic Code and Short Heading
These fields are automatically populated from the current Item Master record.
    Discrete Value
    Allowable value for the characteristic.
  4. Save your changes.
