Search terms with results

Dynamic search evaluates search keywords specified by users against supported item fields to return matching results. Dyanmic search supports two types of queries:

  • Single Field query
  • Multiple Words query

Single Field query

A Single Field query searches at one specific item field.

For example, if a user searches for a keyword that matches an item name, the Item Name query can return results because it searches at the item name field.

Each Single Field query is restricted to an item field. Therefore, a Single Field query returns an item only when the entire search keyword appears within that field. When search keywords were spread across multiple item fields, a Single Field query may not find the item because not all keywords appear in their respective field.

These item fields support single field queries:
  • Item Number
  • Item Name
  • Item Description
  • Item Long Description
  • Category
These item fields support single field queries only when enabled through application properties:
  • Brand
  • Manufacturer
  • Alias Item Number
  • Alias Item Name
  • Alias Item Description
Note: If these fields are not enabled, Dynamic Search does not evaluate search keywords against them.

Multiple Words query

Unlike Single Field queries, a Multiple Words query can find items even when the words in the search keyword come from different supported item fields.

For example, if a user searches for keywords from supported item fields such as item number and item name, the Multiple Words query evaluates each word across the supported item fields and returns results.

You can configure the Multiple Words query in the Relevancy Rules in the Business Center by using either AND operator or the OR operator. See Infor Rhythm for Commerce Administration Library (Cloud) and select Administrator > Infor Rhythm for Commerce Business Center Administration Guide > Searchendizing > Configuring search settings.

The Multiple Words query evaluates keywords against these item fields:

  • Item Number
  • Item Name
  • Item Description
  • Item Long Description
  • Brand
  • Manufacturer

Other considerations and limitations

  • The Multiple Words query only searches the search terms from supported item fields. If the Multiple Words query is using the AND operator and the search keyword combines values from unsupported fields such as Category and supported fields such as Item Name, the Multiple Words query won't return results. The Single Field queries also won't return results as the search keyword is already a combination from different item fields.
  • Character variation applies to each term in a Multiple Words query. In contrast, Single Field queries apply character variation only to a single‑word keyword.

  • Word order does not affect the Multiple Words query because it evaluates each term individually. Word sequence applies only to Single Field queries.
  • Multiple Words query evaluates multiple item fields. Each field has a weighted score based on the relevancy setting. When search keywords show in different fields, the search combines the weighted scores from all matching fields to determine the order of items in the search results.
  • Synonyms Query works independently and does not affect the Multiple Words Query. Synonyms apply only when the entire search keyword exactly matches a synonym rule. The Multiple Words query does not evaluate synonyms for each search term.
  • Multiple Words query does not support special characters. Special character handling is supported only in Singular Field queries.
