Using M-values

When you associate inventory in Operations and Regulations with a linear asset, you can measure the position of the inventory on the length of the linear asset in two different ways. By default, GeoAdministrator uses the linear distance along the asset. Some agencies may prefer to use M-values for more accurate measurements.

M-values represent mile markers along a linear asset, which may differ from the linear distance due to changes in elevation. If the linear asset layer in your GIS supports M-values, you can use either the linear distance or the M-values to specify the location of the inventory along the asset. These values are used to populate the Distance From and Distance To columns in the linear asset.

To indicate the asset types and GIS layers for which you want to use M-values, edit your GeoAdministrator preferences.

  1. Click Preferences on the GeoAdministrator tab.
  2. Select the O&R Accessories tab.
  3. Click Associations Config.
  4. On the MValue tab, specify this information:
    Select Asset Type
Select the Operations and Regulations asset type for which you want to use M-values.
    Select GIS Layer
Select the GIS layer that corresponds to the selected asset type. The list shows all GIS layers that support M-values.
    Select Unit of Measure
Select the unit of measure that you want to use.
  5. Click Add.
GeoAdministrator adds a new entry to the grid on the MValue tab. For each combination of an asset type and a GIS layer, GeoAdministrator will use M-values to calculate the locations of associated inventory.

You can click Edit to update items in the grid, or click Remove to delete them.
