Splitting a linear asset

You can use GeoAdministrator to create two linear assets from a single existing linear asset by adding a node somewhere between the existing endpoints. For example, you might want to split a sewer main into two mains by inserting a sewer node at the midpoint.

  1. Start an ArcMap edit session.
  2. Use any of the ArcMap selection tools to select the linear asset you want to split.
  3. Click Split Selected Linear Assets in the GeoAdministrator toolbar.
  4. Under Split Location, select the endpoint from which you want to measure the location of the split.
  5. In the Distance field, specify the distance from the selected endpoint at which you want to split the asset.
GeoAdministrator shows half of the total length of the asset by default, but you can specify a different value.
  6. Under New Line Asset(s), select the option button that indicates how you want to create the new linear assets.
Most importantly, the option you select indicates how COMPKEYs will be assigned to the new records. You can use the original key for one of the new records and create a new key for the other one, or you can create new keys for both new assets. Thus, there are three option buttons. Selecting Create two new assets (expire the old) will create two new asset records, each with a new key. The other two options let select which of the two new assets will keep the original key.
  7. Select the Copy Attributes or Default Attributes option button.
These options define whether the attributes of the original asset record, such as the pipe diameter and the manufacturer, will be kept. If you select Copy Attributes, GeoAdministrator will copy the attributes from the original linear asset to the asset that keeps the original key. If you select Default Attributes, GeoAdministrator will create new records without copying any of the original attributes. Note that Default Attributes is the only available option if you selected the Create two new assets (expire the old) option.
  8. Under New Point Asset, select the layer and asset type for the new point asset you're creating to split the linear asset.
  9. Type a unique identification code for the new point asset in the Unit ID field.
  10. Under Attributes, select one of the three option buttons.
Use these option buttons to choose whether you want to copy attributes from one of the two existing endpoints to the new one. If you select Default Attributes, GeoAdministrator will create a new point asset record without copying any attributes.
  11. Click OK.
