Synchronizing data

After you've set up field mappings between your Operations and Regulations database and your geodatabase, you can synchronize the data in these fields. Synchronization is a data transfer operation in which GeoAdministrator copies the selected data from one database to the other.

  1. Select the map features for which you want to synchronize data.
  2. Click Synchronize Database Fields on the GeoAdministrator tab.
  3. In the Synchronize dialog box, select From O&R to GIS, From GIS to O&R, or By Ownership.
With the first two options, you select the database from which you want to transfer data to the other database. If you select By Ownership, GeoAdministrator will use the owner defined for each mapped field to determine in which direction the data will be copied. For example, if Operations and Regulations is the owner of a particular field, the data in that field will be copied from the Operations and Regulations database to the geodatabase.
  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Select Fields dialog box, select the check boxes for the mapped fields that you want to synchronize.
If you selected From O&R to GIS or From GIS to O&R, GeoAdministrator automatically selects each field for which the selected "from" database is the owner. You must manually select any other fields you want to transfer to override the default ownership. You can also use the Select All and Unselect All buttons to select or unselect all fields at once. If you click Select Default, GeoAdministrator will return to the original selection based on the synchronization option that you selected and the field ownership. You can select any field in the table, but note that mapping to a foreign key field can lead to corrupted data. If you select a foreign key field, GeoAdministrator shows a warning message and requires you to confirm the mapping.
  6. Click OK.
If GeoAdministrator can't synchronize any of the fields you selected, the Results dialog box gives an explanation of the reasons. For example, if the data in the Operations and Regulations field is validated against a code definition, you can't copy any values from the GIS database that aren't valid codes. You can right-click any feature in the Results list to see a list of options such as flashing a feature or zooming to it.
