Creating network assets

For network assets, such as a sewer mains, storm mains and channels, or water mains, you can sketch networks of mains and nodes in ArcGIS Pro and create both the features (points and lines) and the O&R inventory in one step.

A network asset is defined based on beginning and ending nodes, each of which is a separate point asset in your inventory. For example, a sewer main record might represent the stretch of pipe between two manholes. When you use the sketch tool to create a network asset, you're creating three features in ArcGIS Pro (two point features and a line feature), and three asset records in Operations and Regulations. You can also create a network asset using existing endpoints.

  1. Select the Edit tab in ArcGIS Pro and click Create.
  2. Select a network asset layer in the Create Features pane.
  3. Click Create O&R Network Assets.
  4. From the Target list, select the layer in which you want to create the network asset.
  5. Click the map where you want to place the first endpoint.
Note: Activate snapping in ArcGIS Pro to ensure the end points of mains are accurately placed, and to ensure GeoAdministrator detects the right existing feature when attempting to connect to an existing asset.
  6. Double-click the map where you want to create the second endpoint.
  7. Under Source Point, select the layer and asset type for the first endpoint (also known as the source or upstream endpoint).
  8. Specify an identification code for the source point in the Unit ID field.
  9. Under Segment, select the type of network asset you're creating from the Asset Type list.
  10. Under Destination Point, select the layer and asset type for the downstream endpoint, and specify the unit ID.
  11. Click OK.
GeoAdministrator creates two point features and a line feature in the geodatabase, and adds the corresponding asset records to the Operations and Regulations database. The COMPKEY, COMPTYPE, and the various unit ID values are copied from the Operations and Regulations database to your GIS attribute tables. The Feature List is then displayed with the three new assets listed in the grid.
