Adding an observation to an asset inspection

To add observations, use the Observations tab of the Inspection InfoViewer. You can also add observations when creating an inspection.
  1. Begin to create an inspection, or load the inspection you want into the Inspection InfoViewer.
  2. Under Observations, enable editing in the grid and click Add.
  3. Specify this information:
    Observation
Specify the identification code for the observation being recorded.
    Severity
Specify a code for the severity of the observation.
    Measurement
Specify a measurement for the observation.
The meaning of the measurement varies depending on the type of observation. For example, if the observation identifies a pavement crack, the measurement might indicate the length of the crack.
  4. If the asset is linear, such as a roadway or a water main, use the fields under Location to define the point or range where the observation is located.
    1. From the Measured From list, select B if the observation is measured from the beginning of the asset or inspection length. Select E if it is measured from the end.
    2. If the observation is located along a range of the asset, such as a crack, enter the beginning and ending points of the range in the Distance From and Distance To fields. If the observation is located at a single point, such as a root intrusion, enter the same number in both fields.
    3. If the observation is located across the asset, such as a hole, type the width of the observation in the Width field and select the unit of measure from the list to the right.
    4. If the observation occurred at a point, enter the observation's distance from the center of the asset in the Offset field and select the unit of measure from the list to the right. Use zero as the center of the asset, negative numbers to denote the distance from the center to the left, and positive numbers to denote the distance from the center to the right. For example, if the element is 10 feet from the center of a roadway to the left, you would enter -10.
  5. Specify any other information about the observation.
  6. Click Save.
The observation is added to the inspection. If an observation rating formula is defined in the Workflow Manager, the rating value is also calculated. The rating is displayed in the Rating column in the Observations grid, and will be displayed in the Rating field when you open the observation in the Inspection Observation Information dialog box.
