Creating an asset type

This topic explains how to create a simple, network, or segment asset type. The steps for creating a linear asset type are slightly different.

See Creating a linear asset type.

  1. Select Asset Management > Setup > Create Asset Type.
  2. Specify this information:
    Name
Specify a name for the asset type.
    Class
    Select Network, Segment, or Simple.

In addition to the way assets are identified, the asset class determines which attributes are available for the asset type and the types of associations you can define.

  3. On the Attributes tab, select the attributes that you want to make available for the asset type.
To add an attribute, select the attribute you want in the Available Attributes grid and click the right arrow button to move it to the Selected Attributes grid. You can also click the left arrow to remove an attribute from the Selected Attributes grid, or click Clear to remove all attributes.
  4. To record structural information for the asset type, specify a detail page in the Structural Detail Page field.
  5. On the Associations tab, specify the other asset types the new asset type can be associated with.
  6. On the Menu tab, specify one or more menus that the asset type will be displayed on.
  7. On the Unit Types and Component Types tabs, define any unit types and component types for the asset type.
  8. Click Save.
  9. Set up access control for your new asset type.
Users must be granted access to the new asset type before they can use it.
