Service definitions

Service definitions specify the rules for billing customers for the different types of utility services your agency provides, such as water, sewer, or garbage collection. For each service type, you can define information such as whether the service is required or optional, whether it is billed to an owner or tenant, the type of asset used to meter the service, and the service request types used to start and stop the service. You can also create custom fields to record information that is required to bill individual accounts for the service, such as the number of waste containers for a garbage service.

Because the same services might be billed differently in different districts or for different account classes, you can set up multiple service definitions for each service type. For example, a water service might be metered in some districts, but accounts in other districts that don't have meters might be charged a flat monthly fee. You can create a separate water service definition for each district to bill customers appropriately.

Note: Service definitions do not include any formulas for calculating charges. Charges are calculated based on rate tables, which you associate with services when you define service-based line items.
