Index numbers and sequence numbers

Each meter position in a route is identified by a unique index number and sequence number. The index number indicates the order in which the meter is to be read, and the sequence number is a custom value that your agency can use to categorize related positions. For example, your agency might assign sequence numbers in the 200-range for all positions on one block and in the 300-range for all positions on another block.

Infor Public Sector automatically updates a route’s index numbers as positions in the route change, such as when you transfer positions to another route. If you select the automatic update option in Route Sequence Setup, then the sequence numbers will also be updated when the index numbers change. If not, you must edit the sequence numbers manually. You can either modify an individual sequence number when you edit a position, or you can modify a group of sequence numbers simultaneously.

There are three methods for manually updating groups of sequence numbers:

  • You can make a group of sequence numbers equal to their index numbers.
  • You can increment each sequence number by a specified amount. For example, if you increment by 10, then sequence numbers 1, 2, and 3 will become sequence numbers 11, 12, and 13.
  • You can resequence by interval, meaning that sequence numbers are incremented by an amount greater than 1. For example, index numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 might correspond to sequence numbers 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25. If you leave gaps between sequence numbers, you can later insert additional sequence numbers without changing your whole numbering system.
