SPC Control Limits

SPC Control limits define the expected range of variation in a manufacturing or business process. These limits help identify normal versus unusual variation. By monitoring these limits, organizations can maintain process stability, identify trends or deviations early, and support consistent product quality.

Control Charts obtain limits in these ways:

  • Explicitly defined for each unique combination of data linked to an SPC cut-by rule.
  • Calculated automatically (when manually requested) from an existing SPC control chart after the process is considered stable.

All non-calculated control limits administration is performed through the primary control limits administration table.

Control limits can be updated over time, and these changes are displayed as steps on the control chart. Trend rules are assessed when data is recorded and any violations are reported immediately. The new control limits cannot be used to assess historical data.
