Material Property Range

Material Property Range defines acceptable intervals for material property rather than specific values. Each range is defined using a minimum value and a maximum value. These ranges are used to define the range of characteristics applicable to quality inspections, quality specifications, and tools. However, material property values are defined on material.

The application compares a material’s property value against defined ranges to determine applicability for specifications, tools, and inspections.

For example, material property Weight can include material property ranges, such as 98g-102g, 248g-252g, and 495g-505g.

Material property range example

In a ‘Beverage Can’ manufacturing scenario, a bright can includes these material properties:

  • Size
  • Gauge
  • Neck

The following materials exist with material property values defined for Gauge:

Material Gauge
BC001 242
BC002 250
BC003 251
BC004 255
BC005 260
BC006 265
BC007 275
BC008 285
BC009 315

The Gauge material property can be defined using the following material property ranges:

Range Min Value Max Value
Small Gauge 200 249
Medium Gauge 250 264
Large Gauge 265 299
Very Large Gauge 300 400

Quality Specifications can be defined using the following material property ranges:

Specification Gauge
Thin Wall Spec Small Gauge
Standard Wall Spec Medium Gauge
Thick Wall Spec Large Gauge
Heavy Wall Spec Very Large Gauge

The application associate’s materials with specifications by matching property values to the defined ranges:

  • Material BC001 with gauge 242 is associated with specification Thin Wall Spec because the materials gauge falls within the specification’s range of 200 to 249.
  • Materials BC002, BC003, BC004, and BC005 with gauges 250, 251, 255, and 260 respectively, are associated with specification Standard Wall Spec because the materials’ gauges fall within the specification’s range of 250 to 264.
  • Materials BC006, BC007, and BC008 with gauges 265, 275, and 285 respectively, are associated with specification Thick Wall Spec because the materials’ gauges fall within the specification’s range of 265 to 299.
  • Material BC009 with gauge 315 is associated with specification Heavy Wall Spec because the material’s gauge falls within the specification’s range of 300 to 400.
