Bodymaker Tool Inspections

Bodymaker tools require periodic diameter measurements. For this purpose, a specific inspection must be configured for the tool asset.

Specification limits are not required for inspection variables that measure the diameter of bodymaker tools. The diameter values defined in the progression table are used as the specification limits. To use these values automatically, the inspection variable code must be set to DIA.

When a bodymaker sub-tool is inspected:

  • The diameter of the tool is updated with the newly measured diameter. If multiple diameter values are recorded during the inspection, the maximum value is used.
  • The new diameter is compared with the values in the applicable progression table to determine the corresponding grade. The progression table maps diameter values to grade numbers, based on the tool type and cavity number.
    • The grade of the tool is updated based on the grade associated with the new diameter.
    • If a matching grade is available in the progression table, the tool is considered in-spec. If the tool is in the To Be Repaired state, the state changes to the Available state and the tool are marked as Fully Usable.
    • If no matching grade is available in the progression table, the tool is considered out-of-spec. The tool state changes to the To Be Repaired state, the tool is marked as Not Usable, and a Tool Invalid alarm is raised.

The recorded tool diameter is always updated to reflect the measured value. The total grade is then determined from the updated diameter using the progression table. Therefore, the grade of a sub-tool can change as the diameter changes due to wear or regrinding.
