Asset Materials
Asset Materials link each asset to a material number. The asset material number can represent:
- A generic definition that describes the purpose or type of the asset at a high level.
- A specific manufacturer reference, such as the model number.
The material definition can also include a Bill of Materials (BOMs) that identifies the asset components and spare parts as sub-materials.
Using material numbers for assets improves asset identification in master data management and reporting.
When multiple instances of the same base asset exist, the assets can share the same material number while maintaining unique asset names.
For example, four machines of the Injection Molding machine type can exist wherein:
- Three machines are an older model (ELCO-23).
- One machine is a newer model (PRAXO-J) from a different equipment supplier.
Asset materials can be modeled in one of these ways:
- Using model numbers as the asset material, when the assets differ significantly because of variations in sub-components or planned maintenance requirements.
- Using the machine type name or another high-level description, when the source or model of the assets does not result in differences in components or maintenance requirements of the asset.
When materials are added to represent assets, this configuration is required:
- The value in the Material Class field must be set to Asset. This value can be used to indicate the material as an asset.
- The Material Type is defined as a single high-level material type for assets. However, asset materials can be divided into multiple user-defined types, if required.
