Examples of Use

Organizations can run the report monthly or quarterly and compare MTBF and MTTR trends for lines or machines. An increase in MTBF combined with a decrease in MTTR indicates that equipment is failing less often and is being restored to operation quickly when failures occur. As a result, the report serves as an effective KPI tool for evaluating the success of preventive maintenance programs, reliability initiatives, and operational excellence efforts.

Identify chronic reliability problems on critical equipment

Maintenance managers can use the MTBF report to determine which machines experience failures most frequently. By grouping the report by machine and reviewing MTBF and stop counts, teams can identify equipment with unusually low MTBF values, indicating recurring breakdowns or process failures. This helps prioritize preventive maintenance activities, root cause investigations, and equipment improvement projects where they can deliver greatest operational impact.

To achieve this, apply these filters:

  • Select the value in the Time Frame field to Last Quarter on the Time Frame tab.
  • Select the value in the Group by field to Machine on the Grouping tab.

Run the report. Optionally you can select the MTBS and MTTR chart.

When the chart view is selected:

  • The x-axis displays machines
  • The y-axis displays MTBF and MTTR values in hours.

Analyze the impact of downtime reasons

Production and engineering teams can group the report by stop reason to understand which failure causes contribute most to reduced equipment reliability. Comparing MTBF and MTTR by stop reason helps reveal whether breakdowns are being caused by mechanical issues, material problems, operator interventions, or other recurring events. This information supports targeted continuous improvement initiatives and corrective action planning.

To achieve this, apply these filters:

  • Select the value in the Time Frame field to Last Quarter on the Time Frame tab.
  • Select the value in the Group by field to Reason on the Grouping tab.

Run the report. Optionally you can select the MTBS and MTTR chart.

When the chart view is selected:

  • The x-axis displays machine stop reasons.
  • The y-axis displays MTBF and MTTR values in hours.
