Supermarkets
A supermarket is a storage area within the production area of a factory. This area is used to store frequently consumed materials that is required for production operations. When materials are required for production, delivery from the supermarket helps reduce material retrieval and transportation time. Supermarkets also support efficient material replenishment to production areas due to these characteristics:
- Closer Proximity to production area so the transportation distance and delivery time is reduced.
- Compact storage area, enabling faster identification and retrieval of materials.
- Storage of a limited range of inventory items, resulting in lower congestion. This also reduces traffic from personnel, forklifts, and other material handling equipment, for easier access to materials.
The inventory in the supermarket is replenished from a warehouse when the stock levels runs lower than the defined minimum stock level for a material. This replenishment process enables Kanban based material flow and inventory management within the factory.
A supermarket is a logistics work center that is modelled as a machine for which the Location Class is set to Supermarket. See .
Each supermarket is associated with one or more storage locations where material can be stored and managed.
