Specification limits

A specification limit is defined against a particular variable and defines the nominal, upper, and lower acceptable values for each variable. The limits might also define 'reasonable' limit bounds that can be used to recognize outliers that would not typically occur and therefore deemed unacceptable for entry or ignored automatically.

Specification limits exist for a period of time and can be revised. Although a variable might relate to an inspection, the specifications expected for the variable will typically relate to the material being produced at the time of the check. Each variable's specification relates to a specification set that is associated with the material properties.
