Asset counters

Asset counters track how much an asset has been used over time. They support maintenance planning, operational monitoring, and data-driven decision-making.

Usage data is typically collected for machines and tools, with counters logged during production activities.

Counters can record various types of usage metrics, such as:

  • Cycles
  • Pieces
  • Length
  • Weight

For example, a counter can record how many cycles a machine has completed, how many parts a tool has produced, or how much material has passed through a process.

These counters provide insights such as:

  • Total usage across an asset’s lifetime
  • Usage since the last maintenance or repair
  • Usage between installations or tool changes

Counters can also trigger automatic actions. For instance, a maintenance task can be scheduled once a counter reaches a predefined threshold.

Asset counter script

To ensure performance, MES runs a background process once per day that aggregates production counts into asset counters. While counters are not updated in real-time, this delay is acceptable for most use cases because thresholds are generally set well above typical daily usage.
